I am the owner and artist behind Clay Maiden, a ceramic based studio in Tempe, AZ. I have been working with ceramic for over 15 years. It’s hard to remember a time when I wasn’t creating with clay.
My studio practice uses sculpture and mixed media to tell the story of a spirit having a human experience using the human figure as well as iconography personal to me.
I create my sculptures from with slabs of clay. The process is delicate, each slab piece can only be minimally altered before it dries. In turn this method capture the subtle curves of the figure and highlights the capabilities of the medium. Large figures are built completely hollow from a procelainous clay which allows the piece to move and change in the subsequent firings.
Leaving as many opportunities for chance, the work being able to have a voice of its own in determining the final look and meaning of the piece is an important element of my work.
